| Denise Resnik named to national autism advisory panel - bizjournals Posted: 30 Apr 2010 10:17 AM PDT Denise Resnik, a co-founder of the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center, has been appointed to a federal autism advisory committee. The mother of an 18-year-old autistic son, Resnik was set to articipate in a conference call today for her first meeting of the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee. This comes on the heels of organizing an exhaustive fundraising breakfast Thursday, where SARRC announced its alliance with Calgary-based Sinneave Family Foundation. Resnik said she was disappointed she was the only member who couldn't make today's meeting in person. The meeting is being held in the offices of The Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. "It's not as much fun to be on the phone, but it's incredibly helpful and what is reassuring based on the presentations and the conversations this morning is that I feel very confident of SARRC's alignment with the national priorities that are being set," Resnik said during a break. Sebelius appointed five new public members to the IACC, expanding the committee to a total of 24 members. The responsibilities of the IACC include facilitating the efficient and effective exchange of information on autism activities among government agencies; coordinating autism-related programs and initiatives; and developing a strategic plan for autism biomedical and services research, and related activities. Federal agencies represented on the IACC include the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Administration for Children and Families. Autism is an epidemic affecting children and adults around the world. In the United States, one in 110 children are affected by autism spectrum disorders. Other new members of the committee representing non-federal public members are Geraldine Dawson with Autism Speaks, Gerald D. Fischbach with the Simons Foundation, Ari Ne'eman with Autistic Self-Advocacy Network, and Marjorie Solomon with the University of California, Davis. Current members include Dr. Francis S. Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health; and Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Resnik also serves on the Autism Speaks Family Services Committee and Advancing Futures for Adults with Autism Steering Committee, and participated in the 2006 National Institutes for Health Autism Matrix Review and the IACC Scientific Workshops to develop the IACC Strategic Plan and subsequent updates. | The Autism Speaks 2010 walk raises $150K in Tampa Bay - 10 Connects Posted: 01 May 2010 12:17 PM PDT St. Petersburg, Florida - Saturday, about 2,500 walkers in St. Petersburg pounded the pavement in the fight to fund autism research. The Autism Speaks walk raised more than $150,000, thanks to donations in Tampa Bay alone. The walk is one of 80 similar walks around the country. For about 30 minutes, walkers circled North Straub Park in a half-mile loop designed to raise awareness about autism and money for autism research. The walk began at 10:30 a.m. "It makes me happy," said Stephen Genaurdi, 27, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of six. His mother, Sharon, spearheaded the "Strivin' for Stephen" team, which raised $8,000 for the cause. While Stephen struggles with social issues, his mother says he is gifted with mental genius. "He can tell you what day of the week you were born. His math skills are great. He loves music from the fifties," Sharon said. When Sharon asked Stephen what dates he's participated in the last three walks for Autism Speaks, he responded without hesitation. "Veterans Day 2006. 2-23-08. 3-28-09. 5-1-10." | New bill creates autism support in Arizona - ABC 15 News Posted: 01 May 2010 09:11 AM PDT
PHOENIX -- A new bill signed into law should offer better support for children with autism in Arizona. The legislation, also known as SB 1181 is sponsored by Arizona Senator Amanda Aguirre, and creates what is called the "Autism Spectrum Disorder Task Force." According to the Centers for Disease Control, one in every 150 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Aguirre said the numbers are growing, and the bill she backs will help make treatment and resources more available to families of children with the disorder. "We still do not know the cause of autism spectrum disorders, but with coordinated research we can help families and caregivers in their fight." Officials also said the bill will identify current funding sources for services provided to persons with autism spectrum disorder and determine if there are additional available federal or other funding sources that are not being used. "If our state service system can become more coordinated and supportive of families, and direct resources towards effective services, there is no question that many more individuals with autism in Arizona can learn to talk, socially interact, participate in the community, be employed, live independently and lead meaningful lives as Arizona citizens." | Indiana theater caters to people with autism - Oregonian Posted: 01 May 2010 02:09 AM PDT (AP) GREENWOOD, Ind. - One Saturday each month, moviegoers at the AMC theater in Greenwood don't have to worry about being told to keep quiet or stay in their seat during the film. Instead, talking is allowed, even encouraged, along with wiggling, twisting and squirming. The lights are on, the volume turned down low and the movie starts without any previews. Children with autism point and squeal when their favorite actor appears on screen, sometimes leaping from their seats to get closer to the screen.
The special Saturday screenings are part of a nationwide program that suspends normal theater etiquette and allows people with autism and other similar conditions to enjoy a movie their own way. For some Johnson County residents who have a child with autism, getting to see a movie as a family is something they'd never done before. And sitting in a theater munching on popcorn allows the kids to have the same experiences as their classmates and friends, parents said. Many of the same families have come to the Greenwood theater since it started the showings in October 2008. In early April, about 50 people came for a 10 a.m. showing of "Diary of a Wimpy Kid." The movies provide an option for families who feel uncomfortable or fear getting kicked out of a regular movie, Johnson County Autism Support Group co-chairwoman Sheila Benham said. "They're able to go and not feel the pressure of having their child have to act like a typical child," Benham said. Her 9-year-old son, Jack Morris, has autism and sometimes lets out a loud guffaw during a movie. And like other children with autism, he's sensitive to loud noises and feels uncomfortable if he's unaware of his surroundings in a dark room. Less than a year ago, 4-year-old Jack Abott would whimper and cry whenever his family drove by a movie theater, his mother Amanda Cooper said.
