| Alarming Increase in Autism Brings Together Hundreds of Parents, Researchers and ... - YAHOO! Posted: 25 Aug 2010 10:00 AM PDT SAN DIEGO, Aug. 25 – The Autism Research Institute states that many of those diagnosed with autism have underlying medical disorders that are amenable to treatment. SAN DIEGO, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released new estimates that one in every 110 children (1 in 70 boys) is diagnosed with autism. Autism has become more common in our children than cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined. Autism affects children from all socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds and places a tremendous economic burden on affected families and society at large, costing up to $3.2 million per child for a lifetime of care and over $35 billion in annual societal cost. The Autism Research Institute (ARI) was the first organization to call attention to the alarming increase in autism and today has become the hub of a worldwide network of parents and professionals who are seeking answers to what has caused this dramatic increase, and what can be done to help restore health to those affected. According to Kenneth Bock, MD, author of the acclaimed Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Asthma and Allergies, new research is challenging the long-held view that autism is an incurable genetic disorder. "What we are discovering is that those with autism often times have underlying medical disorders that impair the neurological, gastrointestinal, metabolic and immune systems, and when these problems are treated the symptoms of autism often improve. These medical treatments work synergistically with behavioral and educational programs to provide the best possible outcomes," stated Bock. On Oct. 7-10 hundreds of autism experts, parents, and professionals from around the world will gather in Southern California to attend the Autism Research Institute's Defeat Autism Now! Fall Conference at the Westin Long Beach and the Renaissance Long Beach Hotels. For more information go to www.defeatautismnow.com. The Autism Research Institute was founded in 1967 by the late Dr. Bernard Rimland and is the only autism organization specifically focused on biomedical treatments for the disorder. ARI is the only national non-profit autism organization to receive the esteemed "Four Star Award" by Charity Navigator for sound fiscal management. | Health officials urge parents to immunize kids for school - Deseret News Posted: 23 Aug 2010 04:07 PM PDT Published: Monday, Aug. 23, 2010 5:11 p.m. MDT SALT LAKE CITY — Going back to school typically means getting reacquainted with homework, tests and, in some cases, hypodermic needles. Health experts are advising parents of school-age kids to make sure their children are up to date on all of their required immunizations. Though the vast majority of students receive the necessary immunizations, some parents have voiced concern about the potential side effects of some vaccines that contain mercury and pose a perceived link to autism. While there is no scientific evidence of a link, parents cannot be forced to immunize their child. But local health experts warn that not doing so could have far-reaching consequences. "You may choose not to immunize your child, and that's your choice," said Dr. Charles Pruitt, medical director for child advocacy at Primary Children's Medical Center. "But by not immunizing your child, you're putting other children at risk. It's one thing to make a choice for your own child, but (parents) really need to think about the other children in our community." Story continues below Some illnesses, like pertussis — or whooping cough — have been on the rise in Idaho, Oregon and California. In fact, Idaho had cited 77 cases of pertussis during the first six months of this year, compared with 45 cases during the same time last year. In children, the disease can cause persistent and severe coughing. More than half of all infants under the age of 1 who contract pertussis need to be hospitalized, and in very young infants, pertussis can be fatal. Among the other illnesses to be aware of is meningitis — another potentially fatal disease, according to Martee Hawkins, Canyons District nurse. "There have been deaths of kids, when they live in close quarters (like in dormitories), from meningitis," she said. "It's a very fast-acting disease. ... You can get sick and die within 24 hours or just a couple of days." She said meningitis is usually more prevalent in high school or college-age students. She recommended that students going to college make sure they receive their updated meningitis vaccines. Though parents may have some reservations about having their children immunized, doing so provides the healthiest environment for students, according to Shauna Lund, Davis School District community relations specialist. "Kids are sitting close to one another in a school classroom, and you pass (germs) back and forth when you're that close," she said. "The hope is that all kids are immunized so that they are not passing (illnesses on to each other)." The state health department requires all children entering early childhood programs to receive immunizations for diphtheria, polio, tetanus, haemophilus influenzae type B, pertussis, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, pneumococcal, rubella and varicella (chickenpox). Rotavirus and influenza vaccines are recommended but are not required for students in early childhood programs, which includes licensed day care centers, nursery or preschool, childcare facilities, family home care or Head Start Programs. Children born after July 1, 1991, and entering the seventh grade must be vaccinated with a combined tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis booster, as well as varicella and hepatitis B. e-mail: jlee@desnews.com This entry passed through the Full-Text RSS service — if this is your content and you're reading it on someone else's site, please read our FAQ page at fivefilters.org/content-only/faq.php This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
